A Bit's Life

Abstract

Curiosity is a first step towards... the solution! Have you ever wondered what makes all devices around you alive and keeps them working? I must give you a bad news – this is not a black magic of any kind, neither supernatural power, not even a Jedi Force – this is just a set of smart human ideas, well described with a language called science and technology.

As some of the most curious and stubborn representatives of our species already noticed a long time ago, any physical phenomena can be described with use of mathematics and abstract modelling (at some reasonable level of accuracy of course). So if the pure abstract information is is being related somehow with our reality, then it should be possible to reverse the situation and make the pure information interact with a real world. Do you think this is possible?

Many great minds across ages have tried to accomplish this goal – to create machines that, once set up, would help people to perform boring and time consuming repetitive tasks. Job could be automated then with mechanical manipulation of physical objects or information processing. It was not that long ago, however, when a first computer was built. It required great potential of knowledge and technical skills, but the digital machines had enormous influence on our civilization by creating an information oriented society. Let’s take a look on how does these machines work...
